Alumni Spotlight: Nicole Maloney '23

Nicole Maloney鈥檚 college journey didn鈥檛 start at 天美传媒 but that鈥檚 where it found a second wind and a supportive home. After the theater program at Seattle Central closed and the uncertainty of the pandemic loomed, Nicole faced a moment of doubt. 鈥淚 really wanted to continue my education, but things got messy. I gave up on myself for a while,鈥 she says. 鈥淭hen I found WVC.鈥
What she discovered at WVC was more than just a school. It was a community that believed in her. With the encouragement of her professors and the strength of her own determination, Nicole earned her AA degree in 2023. One class in particular made a lasting impact. 鈥淏eing in Professor Derek Sheffield鈥檚 class was transformative,鈥 she says. 鈥淗e picked one of my poems for the Earth Day eco poetry contest. That moment made me believe in myself as a writer. He was my Dumbledore.鈥
Since graduating, Nicole has returned home to refocus and ground herself in her writing. She鈥檚 now working on a collection of poetry and dreaming of publishing her first book. 鈥淭he pandemic was hard, but WVC gave me the confidence to keep going,鈥 she says. 鈥淓ven subjects I once struggled with, like math and science, felt more manageable because of the patience and encouragement I received.鈥
Nicole鈥檚 story is a reminder that sometimes the path forward isn鈥檛 linear. She went on to share that 鈥淲VC taught me to be patient, to try again when things don鈥檛 go as planned. That lesson has stuck with me.鈥
For current students, she offers heartfelt advice: 鈥淪tay true to yourself and don鈥檛 sell out. Work hard, believe in what you鈥檙e doing, and remember鈥攜ou never know who you鈥檙e inspiring by being your authentic self.鈥
