WVC Foundation receives $25,000 from Coordinated Care for scholarship.

 

The ������ý Foundation received $25,000 from Coordinated Care to support students in the Medical Assistant (MA) or Chemical Dependency Studies programs at ������ý.

Coordinated Care is a managed care organization that provides health insurance coverage throughout Washington state, including Apple Health (Medicaid), foster care, Medicare and the state-based Marketplace (Exchange). Coordinated Care created their Community Scholarship Fund in response to workforce shortages within the healthcare industry. It was designed with an equity lens and launched with community colleges who are skilled at supporting first-generation and underrepresented student populations.

“Coordinated Care is intentionally supporting MA and Chemical Dependency students,” said Rachel Evey, foundation executive director. “Both medical assistants and chemical dependency counselors are essential for the healthcare industry and in short supply in North Central Washington. Coordinated Care is targeting this shortage through their generous scholarship donation.” 

“We are proud to support the ������ý and their mission to enrich North Central Washington by serving educational and cultural needs of communities and residents,” said Beth Johnson, President and CEO at Coordinated Care. “By supporting students pursuing healthcare professions at WVC, we are collaborating on an upstream solution to meet the local health care needs for the North Central community.” 

A medical assistant performs duties in both direct patient care (assisting with patient examinations and treatments, administering medication, and monitoring patient response) and medical office management (maintaining medical records, scheduling appointments, and handling insurance and billing procedures). Students who successfully complete the one-year MA program will receive a certificate of completion and once employed, will be eligible for certification as medical assistants.

The WVC Chemical Dependency Studies program is a two-year associate degree and prepares students to practice chemical dependency counseling. Students who complete the chemical dependency studies program will have met the certification requirements for chemical dependency treatment service providers.
