Meet Aracely Mendoza, WVC's Director of Concurrent Enrollment and a proud first-generation college graduate. Aracely grew up in the Wenatchee Valley and started her journey at WVC as a Running Start student. She went on to earn her associate's degree here before transferring to Washington State University, where she graduated with a dual degree in anthropology and digital technology. Aracely returned to Wenatchee after graduating and began working at WVC in 2021 as an educational planner for Concurrent Enrollment Programs.  

“I live and breathe Running Start because I was a Running Start student, and it’s a big part of my identity,” Aracely shared. “I’ve been in our students’ shoes, and I didn’t have anyone in my family that I could talk to about going to college. When I first heard about Running Start, I couldn’t believe that tuition was free, especially since I didn’t have the tools to know how to apply for financial aid or scholarships.” 

Programs like Running Start help high school students earn tuition-free associate degrees and receive the high school and college credit they need to graduate and transfer to four-year colleges and universities. At WVC, Running Start students have access to academic advising, accommodations, counseling, tutoring, and a support network of college navigators invested in their success. 

Aracely, who had originally planned to go to culinary school, described how influential professors can be in helping a student choose their educational path. "So many classes were fun because the professors were really passionate about their subject,” she shared when describing her favorite WVC memories. “I had never heard about anthropology before taking a class with Professor Alex Taub, and that’s where I discovered my passion for anthropology! I ended up getting my bachelor’s degree in anthropology because of Professor Taub and WVC.” 

The experiences Aracely had as a Running Start student have shaped the guidance that she gives to the students she works with today. "During my first year of working at WVC, I had this one moment where I was talking to first-generation Latina students like me about earning their bachelor's degrees. And I told them they could go farther and get their master's or PhDs, and they told me that they thought PhDs were only for doctors. Being able to explain to them that they can go on to accomplish great things heals a little bit of your inner self, where you can share guidance that helped you get where you are today." 

Aracely works with a team of three college navigators, including one on the Omak campus, and an administrative assistant. She continued, “this work is very rewarding. My team gets to meet every single Running Start student and watch them grow, ask questions, and become scholars. A lot of our students don't always see themselves as college material, and we get to be part of telling students that you can keep going, you belong here, and you can break down barriers for those who come after you." 

Her investment in Running Start extends beyond her professional role as the Director of Concurrent Enrollment and her personal history as a WVC Running Start student. Several members of Aracely’s family and community have successfully gone through the program and have continued their post-secondary education attaining their bachelor’s and master’s degrees.  

Aracely’s advice for students today would be the same advice Professor Taub gave her as a student: “You can do hard things. Running Start prepares you to take that leap into the universe, learn college expectations, build study skills, and succeed in a college environment. My goal is for students to not only navigate the unknowns in college, but to be confident that you have the tools you need to succeed.” 

“I would also encourage students to take advantage of office hours, ask questions, and know that there are so many resources that can help you, from lending libraries for textbooks to emergency funds through our counseling office,” she added. “I know it can be uncomfortable to put yourself out there but just know that faculty and staff want to help you. If you’re feeling shy or unsure about how to get the help you need, reach out to us. We can provide guidance and connect you with the resources you need to be successful.”

EGRESADA DE WVC EN EL FOCO // Les presentamos a Aracely Mendoza, la directora de matriculación concurrente en WVC y una orgullosa graduada universitaria que fue la primera de su familia en ir a la universidad. Aracely se crió en el valle de Wenatchee y comenzó su trayectoria en WVC como estudiante de Running Start. Después pasó a obtener su título de asociado aquí antes de transferirse a Washington State University donde obtuvo una doble licenciatura en antropología y tecnologías digitales. Aracely regresó a Wenatchee después de graduarse y empezó a trabajar en WVC en 2021 como asesora académica para los programas de matriculación simultánea.  

“Me siento muy comprometida con Running Start porque yo fui estudiante de Running Start, y es una gran parte de mi identidad,” comentó Aracely. “He estado en el lugar de nuestros estudiantes, y no tenía a nadie en mi familia con quien podía hablar sobre ir al colegio. Cuando me enteré del programa de Running Start, no podía creer que no había que pagar la colegiatura, especialmente porque no sentía que podía solicitar ayuda financiera ni becas.” 

Los programas como Running Start ayudan a los estudiantes de preparatoria a obtener títulos de asociado sin tener que pagar la colegiatura y al mismo tiempo completan los créditos necesarios para graduarse y transferirse a un colegio o universidad de cuatro años. En WVC, los estudiantes de Running Start tienen acceso a asesoramiento, adaptaciones, consejería, tutoría y una red de apoyo de navegadores académicos comprometidos con su éxito. 

Aracely, que originalmente pensaba estudiar la gastronomía, describió lo influyente que pueden ser los profesores a la hora de ayudar a los estudiantes a elegir su camino educativo. “Muchas clases fueron muy divertidas porque a los profesores les apasionaban sus materias,” compartió Aracely refiriéndose a sus recuerdos favoritos de WVC. “Nunca había oído hablar de la antropología antes de tomar un curso con el profesor Alex Taub, que fue cuando descubrí mi pasión por la antropología. Terminé obteniendo mi licenciatura en antropología gracias al profesor Taub y WVC.” 

Las experiencias que Aracely tuvo como estudiante de Running Start han dado forma a los consejos que ella les da a los estudiantes con quien trabaja en estos días. “Durante el primer año que trabajaba en WVC, tuve un momento particular en el que les hablaba a unas estudiantes latinas de primera generación como yo sobre el proceso de obtener una licenciatura. Y les dije que podrían ir más allá y obtener su maestría o doctorado, y me dijeron que creían que los doctorados solo eran para los médicos. Poder explicarles que pueden seguir adelante y lograr grandes cosas sana una parte del ser interior, ya que son consejos que me ayudaron a llegar a donde estoy hoy día.” 

Aracely trabaja con un equipo de tres navegadores del colegio, incluyendo una en el campus de Omak, y una asistente administrativa. Continuó, diciendo “este trabajo es muy gratificante. Mi equipo tiene el placer de conocer a cada estudiante de Running Start y verlos crecer, hacer preguntas y convertirse en académicos. Muchos de nuestros estudiantes no se consideran aptos para el colegio, y tenemos el privilegio de decirles ‘pueden seguir, pertenecen, y pueden derrumbar las barreras para todos nosotros.'” 

Su dedicación a Running Start va más allá de su papel profesional como directora de matrícula concurrente y su historia personal como estudiante de Running Start en WVC. Varios miembros de la familia de Aracely han pasado por el programa exitosamente y han continuado sus estudios a nivel superior, obteniendo sus licenciaturas y maestrías.  

El consejo que Aracely daría a los estudiantes actuales es el mismo que el profesor Taub le dio cuando era estudiante: “Puedes hacer cosas difíciles. Running Start te prepara para dar un salto al universo, aprender las expectativas universitarias, desarrollar las habilidades para estudiar y tener éxito en un ambiente de educación superior. Mi meta para los estudiantes no solo es que sepan navegar lo desconocido en el colegio, sino que tengan la confianza y las herramientas que necesitan para tener éxito.” 

“También los animaría a los estudiantes a aprovechar las horas de oficina, hacer preguntas y saber que hay muchos recursos disponibles que les pueden ayudar, desde las bibliotecas que prestan libros de texto hasta los fondos de emergencia gestionados por nuestro departamento de consejería,” dijo. “Ya sé que uno puede sentirse incómodo al exponerse, pero que sepan que los profesores y el personal queremos ayudarte. Si te sientes tímido o no sabes cómo solicitar la ayuda que necesitas, contáctanos. Podemos extender la mano para ayudarte.”
