SPOTLIGHT ON FACULTY // WVC Nursing Professor Carolina Martinez Calderon was drawn to healthcare by witnessing the profound impact that compassionate, patient-centered care can have. The empathy and dedication she observed in nurses early on helped shape her education and career path.  

She graduated with an associate degree in nursing (ADN) from WVC Omak in 2018. The ADN program “was an incredibly positive experience,” Carolina said. With between ten to twelve students in her cohort, she described the program as having a family-like atmosphere. “It made my whole experience memorable,” she said.  

She returned to WVC to complete a Bachelor of Applied Science in Nursing degree (RN to BSN) in 2019 and then Gonzaga’s Family Nurse Practitioner program in 2022. Her return to WVC as a nursing faculty member began during the Covid-19 pandemic, when she was working at Lake Chelan Hospital. Then-faculty member Meleah Butruille asked Carolina to serve as a preceptor, mentoring and supervising nursing students at vaccine clinics. Carolina said she appreciated having a bond with Professor Butruille that enabled her to mentor and guide Carolina as a student and then support her as a fellow faculty member. Excited by the work, Carolina applied for and received a full-time faculty position.  

She now works with first- and second-year students in the ADN program, teaching labs, supervising clinical rotations, and delivering theory. “I really like working with first-year students because they are so eager to learn,” she said. “[I] can really guide them into being compassionate individuals. I’m just one step of their journey; they do the rest of the work.” 

She has also found that being a WVC alum gives her a unique perspective: “I understand the challenges that [the students] face. My experience as a former student allows me to empathize with them in their journey and help and support and guide them.”   

Carolina's role as a Hispanic faculty member has also inspired some of her students, who have told her, “It’s nice to see someone like me working here as a nurse; it lets me know I can reach my goal."

ENFOQUE EN EL PROFESORADO // A la profesora de enfermería de WVC Carolina Martinez Calderon le atrajo el campo de la salud al presenciar el impacto profundo que puede tener el cuidado compasivo y centrado en el paciente. La empatía y la dedicación de las enfermeras que observó desde el principio marcaron su trayectoria profesional. 

Se graduó con un título de asociado en enfermería (ADN, por sus siglas en inglés) de WVC Omak en 2018. El programa ADN “fue una experiencia increíblemente positiva”, dijo Carolina. Con una cohorte de entre diez y doce estudiantes, describió al programa como un ambiente familiar. “Hizo que toda mi experiencia fuera memorable”.  

Regresó a WVC para completar una licenciatura de ciencias aplicadas en enfermería (RN a BSN) en 2019 y luego hizo el programa de enfermera de familia en Gonzaga en 2022. Su regreso a WVC como un miembro del profesorado comenzó durante la pandemia de Covid-19, cuando trabajaba en Lake Chelan Hospital. Meleah Butruille, que en ese entonces formaba parte de la facultad, le pidió a Carolina que sirviera de preceptora, orientando a estudiantes en las clínicas de vacunas. Carolina dijo que apreciaba tener una conexión con la Profesora Butruille que le permitió guiar a Carolina como estudiante y luego apoyarla como colega. Emocionada por el trabajo, Carolina solicitó y recibió un puesto de tiempo completo.  

Ahora trabaja con los estudiantes de primer y segundo año en el programa ADN, enseñando laboratorios, supervisando turnos clínicos e impartiendo teoría. “Me gusta mucho trabajar con estudiantes de primer año porque tienen tantas ganas de aprender,” dijo. “Puedo guiarlos para que se conviertan en individuos compasivos. Sólo soy un paso en su camino; ellos hacen el resto del trabajo.” 

También ha encontrado que ser egresada de WVC le da una perspectiva única: “comprendo los desafíos que enfrentan los estudiantes. Mi experiencia como exestudiante me permite empatizar con ellos en su camino y ayudarlos y apoyarlos y guiarlos.” 

El hecho de que Carolina sea una profesora hispana también ha inspirado a algunos de sus estudiantes, quienes le han dicho, “es lindo ver a alguien como yo trabajar aquí como enfermera; me hace saber que puedo alcanzar mi meta.”
