SPOTLIGHT ON WVC ALUMNI // Meet the Mendozas: Mar铆a, Luis, Jaime and Roberto. These four siblings are proud first-generation graduates of 天美传媒, and their stories are a testament to the power of a strong support network. Mar铆a, Luis, Jaime, and Roberto grew up in the Wenatchee Valley and chose to attend WVC after high school. Luis and Roberto pursued technical programs, and Mar铆a and Jaime completed associate degrees.

Portrait of Luis Mendoza standing outside.Luis was the first in the family to enroll at WVC, choosing the Automotive Technology program because 鈥渋t was convenient and close to home.鈥 At WVC, Luis enjoyed 鈥渕eeting students of different ages who were changing careers,鈥 and he appreciated the opportunity to acquire hands-on practice with instructors around to help. He credits the Automotive Technology faculty鈥擩im Hepler and Blake Murray (now retired), as well as current faculty member Bob Greiner鈥攚ith being 鈥渁wesome individuals and instructors. Luis did run into some challenges, including 鈥渒eeping up with English, math and reading classes,鈥 but he said his consistent attendance, time studying with peers, and will power helped him to complete the program, as well as 鈥渁 lunch lady named Frita who was awesome and was willing to make custom sandwiches for me. Luis graduated from the Auto Tech program in 2005 and is currently the lead mechanic for the Cascade School District Transportation Department, where he was selected as Employee of the Year for 2024-25.

Portrait of Maria Mendoza-Sanchez standing outside.Mar铆a 鈥淟ula鈥 Mendoza-S谩nchez credits her brothers Luis and Jorge for her decision to enroll at WVC. 鈥淢y greatest motivators were my own brothers. Even though they are younger than me, they went to college first,鈥 she said. 鈥淟uis was graduating as a mechanic from 天美传媒, and Jorge graduated as an upholstery artist from Wyotech in Wyoming. I told myself, 鈥榃hat are you waiting for? If they did it, you can too! While she had support from her brothers, she still encountered challenges, including the illness of her grandmother. 鈥淪he had a stroke and could not recover from it. I had to take some time off to take care of her,鈥 Mar铆a recalled. Another challenge was technology鈥 Mar铆a attended school at a time when students couldn鈥檛 check out a laptop or other technology to complete homework. 鈥淚 worked at a restaurant at that time, and I remember staying late after my shifts at work to use the computers there to finish my schoolwork,鈥 she said. Still, Mar铆a persevered, sharing that 鈥淭he inner strength that helped me get through was the desire to accomplish a career higher than a high school diploma.鈥

She graduated from WVC with her associate degree in 2007 and currently serves as Migrant Education Program Recruiter at the Quincy School District, where she works with families who are new to the area and work in agriculture. 鈥淚 hold this position [to] heart because I once was a migrant student myself,鈥 Mar铆a said. 鈥淚 remember how hard it was for my parents to navigate the education system.鈥

Portrait of Jaime Mendoza standing outside.Mar铆a鈥檚 brother Jaime was the next to attend school.  鈥淚 chose WVC because I wasn鈥檛 quite sure yet what I wanted to do for a career, and it was an affordable option,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t also helped that I was able to stay home with my parents and work while I went to college.鈥 Like Mar铆a, he credits his family for supporting him during his educational journey, particularly his parents. 鈥淚 am lucky to have parents who understood the importance of continuing my education and helped support me,鈥 Jaime said. 鈥淚 also give credit to the friends I had that helped keep me motivated.鈥

During his time at WVC, Jaime had the opportunity to coach his younger brother Jose鈥檚 basketball team. 鈥淭hat kind of opened my eyes to pursuing teaching,鈥 he said. Jaime earned his associate of arts and sciences transfer degree from WVC in 2012 before transferring to Washington State University to study education. He has been teaching P.E. and Health at Lake Washington High School in Kirkland for the past ten years and says it has been a great experience. 鈥淚 love the relationships you get to build with the students. The different challenges you face on a daily basis and working through them. It's a job that keeps you constantly learning, and I really enjoy that part of it.鈥

Portrait of Roberto Mendoza standing outside.Like Jaime, Roberto was also uncertain about his career path when he enrolled at WVC. He chose the Environmental Systems and Refrigeration Technology (ESRT) program at the recommendation of his brother. 鈥淚 also considered this program as I had interest in building energy efficient homes in the future, and I knew HVAC was a large portion of energy consumption in a home,鈥 Roberto said. Similar to his siblings, making connections with other students through his studies was important to Roberto. 鈥淭he time spent collaborating and learning alongside my peers is what I consider the core highlight of my time at WVC,鈥 he said. 鈥淭here was a lot of teamwork that led to some lifelong friendships.鈥

Like his siblings, Roberto also faced obstacles in his studies. 鈥淥ne of the challenges for me was balancing work with study as I was going to school during the day and working in the evenings. There were also some classes that were more technically challenging than I had anticipated,鈥 he said. Roberto highlighted his self-discipline and openness as inner strengths that helped him complete his degree, but he also gave kudos to ESRT Program Director Greg Jourdan for supporting him throughout the program. 鈥淕reg Jourdan was instrumental in guiding me in the educational process and was able to provide honest career advice based on my strengths,鈥 Roberto said. One of Jourdan鈥檚 goals, Roberto said, was for all the ESRT students to come out of the program with a job鈥攚hich Roberto accomplished before he graduated in 2013. He accepted a job at Logix, where he has worked for 12 years and is now an industrial controls regional sales manager.

The Mendoza siblings supported each other as they completed their education, but they also have important advice to current students: ask for help. The four siblings agreed that their relationships with professors had much to do with their success. Jaime recommended to 鈥渃heck in with your professors if you need help,鈥 sharing that 鈥渢hat is one thing I wish I would鈥檝e done more of when I needed help in a class.鈥 Mar铆a echoed that sentiment, reminding students that 鈥渢here will be classes that are more challenging than others but always ask for help. Reach out to [your] teacher, to mentors, and to classmates. They are always willing to help.鈥

When they reflect on their time at WVC, Mar铆a, Luis, Jaime and Roberto all point to the benefits of pursuing their studies with the guidance of caring faculty as well as the economic and practical benefits of starting their college journey close to home, in their own community. By sticking together and encouraging each other when challenges arose, the Mendoza siblings found the beginnings of their respective career paths at WVC, which led them to successful jobs where they apply the skills and abilities they鈥檝e acquired along the way and contribute to their communities in meaningful ways.

Los cuatro hermanos Mendoza

EGRESADOS DE WVC EN EL FOCO // Les presentamos a los Mendoza: Mar铆a, Luis, Jaime y Roberto.

鈥淢is motivadores m谩s grandes fueron mis hermanos. Me dije a mi misma: 鈥樎緼 qu茅 esperas?
